Jazz at the Bechtler: Latin Jazz
June's Jazz at the Bechtler performance Latin Jazz, also called Afro-Cuban jazz, is based on a style of music that blends rhythms and percussion instruments of Cuba and the Spanish Caribbean with jazz and its fusion of European and African musical elements.
To do the rhythms of this music justice, the Ziad Jazz Quartet brings a talented rhythm section to the Bechtler stage. Long-time Jazz at the Bechtler fans will be familiar with Jim Brock, who brings an extensive kit of percussion instruments with him to the stage. In addition, bassist Nelson Rios and pianist Phillip Howe will be sure to add rich, exciting bass and peppery piano tones on top of the luscious drumbeats from Rick Dior. New to the stage this year, fans can enjoy the trumpet of young Charlotte phenom, Ariel Mejia who will join saxophone performer Ziad Rabie.
