Movement Mornings | The Big Apple

Morning movement tells your body that it's time to be awake, providing you with clarity, focus, and energy for the day ahead. To get us in the swing of things for the upcoming Annemarie Schwarzenbach: Departure without Destination exhibition, the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art has partnered with GottaSwing Charlotte for a monthly series of Movement Mornings programs. These programs are designed to explore swing dance, The Big Apple, and The Charleston, all popular dances during the 1930s and 1940s when Schwarzenbach traveled through the Southern United States. We will explore the history and cultural significance of these movements, listen to music mastered here in Charlotte and try the dances out for ourselves!

The Big Apple dance craze swept the nation in the mid 1930's, and it started right here in the Carolinas. On Saturday, June 4, GottaSwing Charlotte, will discuss a bit of the history of the dance and teach you the moves so that you can do The Big Apple.

Who is Gottaswing Charlotte

GottaSwing Charlotte prides themselves on fostering a fun environment where everyone is welcome. As Charlotte's largest and oldest swing dance organization, they offer group and private instruction in the swing dances of the 1930s and 1940s, including Lindy Hop, Charleston, East Coast Swing, and Balboa.

Who can participate?

All are welcome! The exercises will be accessible for all ages and ability levels. Wear comfy clothes, bring a bottle of water, and come prepared to move!
